we talk about things that don't matter
like the weather and politics
things that slip off your tongue
and evaporate before they even hit the ground
we talk about things
that started out as tiny spots on maps
caught on fire
and ended up as civil wars or revolutions
things that start as little lumps in your body
forcing you to take sides:
to be the defeater or the defeated
so we talk about petty things
like we talk about war and cancer:
in that voice reserved for secrets and cinemas
to make sure those petty things
evaporate before they hit the ground.
